Do you move enough?

In regard to our health, we Americans are at a tipping point. There are increasing numbers of us that are overweight, suffer from chronic diseases such as adult-onset diabetes. Over $50 billion are spent on treating low back pain every year. This does not take into account the tens of billions of dollars that are spent every year on treating those experiencing chronic muscular and joint pain. I find that most clients I work with do not move enough throughout the day.

This pain and dysfunction causes a host of issues that can impact your health. It can even prevent you from working, enjoying the activities you love (exercising, walking, playing with your children), and other areas of your health.

However, there are factors that are completely within your control. They could help you lose weight, control chronic conditions such as diabetes and dramatically improve your quality of life?

Solution

The great news is that the medical community is starting to recognize the correlation between exercise and health. In a 2009 article in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the author reports that exercise is medicine. He explains that physicians should be prescribing it as a way of treating a host of physical conditions including but not limited to diabetes, hypertension, and osteoporosis.

This is excellent news for you. It illustrates that you have significant control over your own health! Furthermore, research has also demonstrated that working with a fitness professional as part of your health care team can be instrumental in helping you achieve your health and fitness goals and even increase the longevity of your life.

I can help you fix the chronic nagging aches, pains, and injuries you suffer through day in and day out. Things such as chronic headaches and trigger points in the neck and upper back, chronic pain in the low back, knee, and shoulder region, and even that chronic knee or shoulder injury you suffered many months or years ago, that just won’t seem to go away.

At Completely Fit, I help empower my clients to take control of their health by marrying three important principles -breathing, exercise, and community. I would like to share with you how you can incorporate these 3 principles into your current busy life. So that you too can experience some of the dramatic effects in your health that my clients experience.

Breathe

1. Breathe. While all of us understand how vitally important breathing is for supplying our body with oxygen, there are several other important roles that proper breathing contributes to our overall health.

Proper breathing helps stabilize your spine and is thereby a great way to improve your posture and even reduce neck and back pain. And with 80% of people experiencing neck and/or back pain, this is a simple way to avoid the side effects of medications and the downtime that is associated with these issues.

Proper breathing, using your diaphragm – your main muscle of breathing – can even help with acid reflux by closing off your esophagus and preventing regurgitation. for a simple 2-minute breathing exercise you can do every day to improve posture, stabilization, and energy visit: Functional Breathing

Exercise

2. Exercise. A 2012 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that individuals that had a more sedentary lifestyle – as measured by the amount of hours spent watching televisions (and I will add working at a computer since computer work requires about as much activity as watching television) – shortened their lifespan as compared to those who didn’t watch as much television.

In addition to decreasing the amount of time you watch television. Taking frequent breaks to stand up and walk around while working on the computer, increasing the frequency of exercise is another great way to maintain your health and vitality. Research shows that working with a fitness professional is a great way to ensure that you increase your daily activity. While also reducing the number of injuries that frequently derail individuals attempts at being more active.

Activity, Diet, Community

3. Activity, Diet, Community. In researching the factors responsible for improving longevity, researchers have found that across the globe, the cultures that have members routinely living into their 90’s and even 100’s share three things in common that contribute to their longevity:

• Each group remained physically active into their advancing years. They walked, worked on farms, and/or exercised as part of their daily lives. This supports our second principle that we need to be more physically active especially as we get older.

• Each group ate organic food that was indigenous to their area. Eating organic fruits and vegetables and hormone-free meats while reducing the reliance on processed foods is one of the easiest ways to dramatically change your health. And if you can find it locally, you can help out the environment at the same time.

• Each group had close relationships with their community including family and friends. Having a strong support is vital to your overall health and well-being. At Completely Fit we foster a supportive and interactive environment, both on-site as well as through the on-line community, so every client is supported by not only me but by your peers. I preach to my children all the time “you are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with”. Surround yourself with positive influences.
