Lessons Learned
Our health industry is constantly studying other nations and other populations to try and come up with a solution to our obesity epidemic. The latest such study targeted the Amish population and their high fat highly refined sugar diet and very low obesity rates.
I think with all things being said the study itself is probably not very scientific, but what can we learn from it? I get asked the same question over and over, which is more important my diet or my exercise routine? My answer is always going to be the same you have to have both. You can not be a 100% healthy if you do not exercise and you can not be 100% healthy if you do not eat correctly.
I think your lifestyle will answer this question, if you workout real hard you do not have to be as careful with your diet (but still everything in moderation). If you do not workout as often as you should you will need to be a lot more careful with how and what you eat.
In the case of this particular study the Amish group they studied are very hard workers. What people sometimes forget to look at may be the old saying “you can’t judge a book by its’ cover”. Take for example a person who exercises and works hard every day but has a very poor diet. They may look good on the outside but what you don’t see are the results to their blood pressure, cholesterol and other tests, which may indicated poor health despite their physical size.
Everything in moderation, if you eat a donut, eat one not the whole box and when you exercise put forth your best effort and good things will come.
Bottom line: you can continue to look at every diet and every magazine and every study out there but the solution is always going to be the same – we can’t have the health we want without both a good diet and a consistent exercise routine.
